Hot Apple Cider Smoothie

Hot Apple Cider Smoothie

Yes, you read that right. This is a hot smoothie! I love smoothies in the morning. Something about drinking my breakfast makes me feel like I’m giving my system a gentle start, plus you can add so many nutritious things to smoothies. They really are a powerhouse breakfast if you do them right.

The problem is, here in Canada it gets so cold that the last thing you want is a cold smoothie for breakfast. Often in the winter I gravitate towards oatmeal instead, but I miss my smoothies. So, I’ve created this hot smoothie to be the best of both worlds. It is so incredibly soothing, and the apple cider flavour is wonderfully seasonal.

My main tip is to ensure that you get apple cider that doesn’t have any added sugar. If you can’t find apple cider then apple juice will work. This smoothie is a bit sweet, so you should remember that when you’re planning out your food intake for the rest of the day. Having a sweet meal isn’t bad, but make sure you aren’t loading up the rest of your meals with sweet things too. The sweetness in this smoothie is, thankfully, entirely natural. The only sources of sugars would be the banana, the apple, and of course the apples in the cider!

This makes two servings, or one large meal-sized smoothie. I shared this one with Marc. :)

Ingredients:

1 apple, diced

1 banana, sliced

1/2 cup gluten free oatmeal

1 heaping tbsp almond butter

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground ginger

A dash of cloves

A pinch of salt

1 cup hot apple cider

The first thing you should do is put your hot apple cider in a pot on the stove and warm it up on medium heat until it gets nice and hot. While it’s warming up, you can load up your blender with the remaining ingredients. Add the apple cider, and then whiz it up until it’s smooth! Just be sure that you can let a bit of steam out of the blender. Maybe start slow and then increase the speed as it blends.

Enjoy!
